Total Solar Eclipse of August 2, 2027: Times and Duration in Andalusia
On August 2, 2027, the Moon will switch off the Sun above southern Spain. The path of totality, about 235 km wide, comes in over the province of Cádiz, covers the Strait of Gibraltar and follows the Costa del Sol as far as the Costa Tropical. Maximum falls around 10:47 Spanish time, with the Sun nearly 40° above the horizon.
Up to 4 min 40 s of totality at Tarifa, against 1 min 44 s at Burgos in 2026: almost three times longer, in mid-morning, under an Andalusian August sky.

Where the path of totality runs
The northern limit grazes Málaga and passes just south of Seville and Granada; the southern limit crosses northern Morocco. Between them, some 235 km: the whole southern tip of Andalusia is inside, from Conil and Cádiz to Motril and Nerja, by way of Algeciras, Gibraltar, Marbella and Málaga.
Being inside it is not a question of comfort. Outside the path, even at 99.99 %, the solar corona stays invisible and day never turns to night. A few kilometres decide everything — which is exactly what the calculator above is for.

Seville, Granada, Cordoba, Almería: a spectacular partial eclipse, but a partial one. To see the corona you have to come down into the path — under an hour's drive from either Seville or Granada.
The rest of the track: Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia
After Andalusia the shadow crosses northern Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, then Egypt, where it reaches its maximum: 6 min 23 s, with the Sun almost overhead — 6 min 20 s at Luxor itself. It ends its run over Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. The calculator works anywhere along the track.
Method and sources
- Ephemerides
- The calculator first queries the IMCCE's OPALE API (Paris Observatory), INPOP19A ephemerides, accurate to about a second. If it does not answer, it falls back on the polynomial Besselian elements published by NASA/GSFC (Fred Espenak) for that eclipse.
- Geometric criterion
- A point lies inside the path if the minimum over time of « distance to the shadow axis minus shadow radius » turns negative. The same criterion drives a city's readout, the drawn path limits and the animated shadow: the three cannot contradict one another.
- Measured precision
- The Besselian fallback was cross-checked against INPOP19A for twelve cities across the three eclipses: contact times differ by 1 to 10 seconds, and path membership agrees everywhere except for one city sitting exactly on the limit. The tables above come from that same engine.
